Why do we call software problems “bugs”? Which language is only spoken, but never written? And why do black holes spin like pirouettes?
On 15 July 2025, we brought these and many more questions to Moritz Bar in Würzburg for our first Science Pub. Under the motto “Science meets Cocktails”, we invited visitors to meet early-career researchers from the University of Würzburg in a relaxed bar setting.
Around 50 guests joined us for an evening of conversations about neurobiology, astronomy, medical physics, computer science, and linguistics. Instead of lectures, we created five themed tables where visitors could move around freely, ask questions, discuss ideas, and explore research through hands-on materials.
Our researchers brought fun facts on beer mats, lab equipment, a language puzzle, and even a handmade PET scanner for a plush unicorn. To encourage conversations across all topics, we also created a Science Bingo. Guests who collected enough clues could enter our final lottery and win a free drink or a book voucher from Bücherei Knodt.
For us, the evening showed how meaningful science communication can be when it happens in everyday places. The conversations were lively, curious, and open — and many visitors shared positive and constructive feedback with us.
